NEW CRIME 'NOVEL'
AT LOCAL LIBRARY

Blackstone police are "checking out" a new mystery at the local library.
It's not in hardbound or paperback.
Lawmen are trying to find out who stole a statue that sat outside the Louis
Spencer Epes Memorial Library. Officer Chris Mathias is handling the
investigation.
The 3-ft. tall cement statue featured a fairy with wings, crossing its legs,
reading a book. It was donated to the library about a year ago by Mrs.
Arline Harris.
"It just makes you sick to your stomach," reacted librarian Joy Gallone. "We
can see everything from the window, so it must have been taken at night."
Ms. Gallone reported the theft Friday morning, January 2nd, and believes it
was stolen sometime between then and New Year's Eve (Wednesday the 31st).
Mrs. Harris had her son-in-law, Anatole Aristov, cement the base of the
statue to a brick in the landscaped area on the north side of the library.
"It wasn't very light," said Mrs. Harris, suspecting the theft is a juvenile
prank.
Anyone with information may call Blackstone Police at 292-3323 or Nottoway
County Crime Solvers at 645-7111.
Someone over the holidays also stole a Christmas wreath from a local woman's
grave in Lakeview Cemetery. The wreath was made by her husband, who
understandably is sickened by the act. Residents in recent years have
complained frequently about thefts of floral arrangements from the local
cemetery. There has been some talk of installing security cameras in various
portions of the graveyard to crackdown on such thefts.
