Nottoway County

Nottoway County was formed in 1788 from Amelia County and is named after the Nottowa Indian tribe. The County is located in lovely Southside Virginia, approximately 50 miles southwest of Richmond. The estimated population is 15,150 which spans an area of 316 square miles. Nottoway County enjoys a healthy diversity of people and economic interests. The three incorporated towns of Blackstone, Burkeville and Crewe have enabled small businesses to develop and thrive. The County is governed by an elected five-member Board of Supervisors. The County Administrator oversees the day-to-day business operation of the County. A full slate of government offices keeps things running efficiently. Nottoway County has many recreational and cultural opportunities for adults and children. Four public lakes offer boating, fishing, swimming, and picnicking. Recreation leagues offer a variety of sports teams for youth to join. Nottoway is nestled between Virginia's beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and the beaches of the Atlantic, each within a short two-hour drive. Five historic buildings on the Virginia and National Registers of Historic Places are located within the County. They are the Nottoway County Courthouse, Schwartz Tavern, Burke's Tavern, Inverness, and Oakridge. There is also a wealth of Civil War history nearby.
