Nottoway County has 2 school systems to choose from - Nottoway County Public Schools and Kenston Forest School, an independent college prepatory school.

 

 

Education

Nottoway County Public Schools

Nottoway County Public Schools serve Nottoway County, an area of 310 square miles in the beautiful rolling hills of Southside Virginia. Its mission is to provide opportunities that enable students to enjoy life, contribute to others' well being, and become responsible, productive citizens in a global community. The goals are (1) provide a safe and positive learning environment; (2) promote and enhance the teaching/learning process; (3) reinforce democratic principles; (4) maintain and upgrade physical plant and equipment; (5) increase public awareness about the value of supporting education.

Nottoway County Public Schools has three schools housing primary level students:

  • Blackstone Primary (Pre-K - 4th Grade)
  • Crewe Primary (Pre-K - 4th Grade)
  • Burkeville Elementary (Pre-K - 4th Grade)  
  • The remaining grades are located at one central site:
  • Nottoway Intermediate (Grades 5 & 6)
  • Nottoway Middle (Grades 7 & 8)
  • Nottoway High (Grades 9-12) Completed in 1995.

All schools are set up with classroom computers, laptops, network access and internet service. Average teacher to student ratio of approx. 1:13.

Other facilities include:
Amelia-Nottoway Vocational School (jointly operated facility providing vocational career training for students grades 11 & 12)
Southside Skill Center (offers vocational training to adults and also serves as the alternative education center)

 

Kenston Forest School

Kenston Forest School, the independent college preparatory school for Southside Virginia, has built a tradition of excellence in education for the past 30 years. They strive to create well-rounded, upstanding citizens by educating students not only in academic subjects, but also in traditional values and morals. Kenston Forest School provides an environment for grades Pre-K through 12 that encourages growth and participation for all students. With the ever-changing world, the school and its campus, curriculum, faculty and programs is constantly evolving, providing a rich setting for the development of its students. The school offers a low student per teacher ratio. This helps to ensure that every child will receive individual attention and get the most of his/her education. Virginia Tech has one of its larger off-campus agricultural research stations in the Blackstone community. The Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center has more that a dozen resident faculty and approximately 20 full-time support staff. Over the past 25 years, the station has provided opportunities for about 40 or 50 students from counties throughout southside Virginia and additional students for other states and foreign countries to earn graduate degrees. The research station is considered a valuable economic development resource for Nottoway County and southside Virginia with ties to the largest research university in the Commonwealth and one of the top 50 in the United States.
