Leadership Blackstone
Purpose Create an expanding pool of people who will be leaders in their
home, work place, and community.
Objectives Help participants develop their own leadership
potential by educating them about the role and workings of government, education,
and volunteer community service.
Unite community residents from diverse
backgrounds to ensure the tapestry of partnership is woven with all threads so the
quilt of common purpose is the truth, is durable, and comfortably
fits.
Provide allies for those who already hold elective or appointive office.
Those who understand the process of government and how a community functions will
be more likely to effectively respond to the reality of challenge and potential.
Explain the relationship the community has with the region, the state and
the federal government so that challenges and solutions, answers and understandings,
are complete, not partial.
Participants
A maximum of twenty people will be selected from those who apply, based on
information provided by the applicants and from references. Applicants may be
interviewed to ensure each class contains the kind of diversity of talent and
experience needed to make the program successful. Those chosen will be expected
to dedicate themselves to the program and be prepared to give of their time,
intellect, and energy. What is derived from the program will be directly dependent on how much each participant puts into Leadership Blackstone. It is an honor to be chosen to participate. Participants will be expected to respond like leaders.
Program
Leadership Blackstone is an eight-month program with sessions devoted to a
variety of government, education, economic development, and community service
subjects which affect community growth and quality of life.
Placement
Those who graduate from Leadership Blackstone will form the nucleus of the
community’s future. They will be eligible to join the alumni association
which will compile and maintain a list for organizations of persons who are ready
and willing to lead the community in ways which are unique to their individuality.
“I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion with education.”
